Important Safety Notification from MASD

Dear MASD Families,

At 4:02 p.m., Moon Area School District officials and Moon Township Police both received a Safe2Say notification informing us of a safety incident on a Moon Area Middle School afternoon bus.

The police responded swiftly to the report. As a result of their investigation, Moon Township Police determined that a middle school student had an airsoft BB gun with plastic BBs on the bus this afternoon. The police now have possession of the weapon. They also concluded that this was an isolated incident and that there is no ongoing threat to the safety of our students or schools at this time.

Bringing any kind of weapon is strictly prohibited and will not be tolerated under any circumstances. The district enforces a strict no-weapons policy on school grounds, including district transportation, and will pursue appropriate disciplinary action in accordance with our Student Code of Conduct.

The district has been reviewing our safety protocols to ensure the continued well-being of our students and staff. We are committed to making any necessary updates to further strengthen our security measures. In the meantime, you can expect a greater police presence on campus as well as the possibility of random checks of student bags/backpacks.

We respectfully request that you talk to your children about the seriousness of bringing any form of weapon, including a look-alike weapon, to school. We also ask that you remind your children about the importance of reporting a threat. If you or your child notices anything unusual or concerning, please report it immediately to local law enforcement or a school administrator. Open communication is vital to maintaining a safe and secure environment for all.

Thank you in advance for your cooperation.

Sincerely,

Barry J. Balaski
Superintendent
Moon Area School District
